You can make stranded wire work in breadboards by soldering the leads clipped from resistors to them. I found this very handy for the RCA cable I cut-up for the MakerProject.
You don't have to fully seat your chips to program them (in your STK500) and it makes it much easier to get them out if you don't.
I was thinking about a throwie, that would react to IR, initially I pictured pointing a remote at the throwie from yards away and have the throwie repeat the message I used the remote to enter. This implementation had only a range of a few cm.
